Message from S/R Commander David Simon
You read it right: you can win one thousand dollars with practically no effort. All you have to do is to get the most people to apply and get accepted into the reserve academy.
There’s also a $750 prize for the number two contender, and another $1,000 for the reserve company or unit whose members recommend the most applicants who get accepted for the reserve academy. The company gets to decide how they want to use it: equipment, training, a big party to celebrate? Your choice!
The funds have been generously donated by the S/R Recruiting Company, from product sales and payments they receive for working recruitment at a number of functions such as the Celebrity Show.
The contest has already started, and runs until December 31 of next year…but with the processing time that means you have to get started NOW!
Every member of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is eligible. The rules are pretty simple, and they’re shown below.
Take someone to Vegas? Pay off some bills? This may be the easiest thousand bucks you ever made. GO FOR IT!

Contest Rules & Guidelines
The following describes the guidelines for an LASD contest to see which members of the department can recommend the highest number of individuals who get accepted for entry into the Reserve academy. The contest will be open to all members of the department, sworn, non-sworn and Civilian Volunteers. As described below, a prize will also be given to the Reserve company or unit whose members recommend the largest number of accepted applicants.
1. The contest will run from August 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008
2. The prizes will be:
A. First prize, to the individual who recommends the most people who are accepted for the LASD reserve academy during the duration of the contest: $1,000. A minimum of five accepted applicants will be required to win First prize.
B. Second prize, to the individual who recommends the most people who are accepted for the LASD reserve academy during the duration of the contest: $750. A minimum of two accepted applicants will be required to win Second prize. This prize may be awarded even if no one qualifies for First prize
C. Company/Unit prize, to the company or unit whose members recommend the most people accepted for the LASD reserve academy during the duration of the contest: $1,000
3. The person making the recommendation must fill out the attached form and email two copies: one to Sgt. Aldo Iturriaga-Reserve Forces Bureau (aeiturri@lasd.org) and another to Reserve Captain for Recruiting Ron Lucchesi, (ronlucc@yahoo.com) at or about the time the candidate submits the 17-page application.
4. The Reserve Captain or Coordinator of a reserve company or unit who believes his unit qualifies for the company/unit prize must submit a statement to Sgt. Iturriaga during the month of January 2009 naming each of the persons accepted for the reserve academy who were recommended by members of that unit.
5. The Reserve Commander for Recruiting, the Reserve Captain for Recruiting and Sgt. Iturriaga will review the records and make the final determination of the prize winners.
6. Station/Unit Reserve Coordinators and SR Recruiting Sgts are eligible only if they can demonstrate in each case that the candidate was a friend or acquaintance who would not otherwise have applied for the program.
7. Reserve Commanders are requested to assure the contest is discussed at each monthly company meeting. Reserve Chiefs are requested to monitor progress at each of their units during the course of the contest in order to assure maximum participation.
